One of the most common questions my couples ask is:

“Should we do a first look?”

Spoiler alert: there’s no wrong answer.  Just the one that feels most true to you.

Both options are beautiful. Both are emotional. But they offer very different vibes, and today, I’m breaking it all down to help you decide.

What Is a First Look?

A first look is a private moment where the couple sees each other before the ceremony. It’s usually just the two of you (and your photographer sneaking around in ninja-style, and it gives you space to take in the emotion without all eyes on you.

Why Some Couples Love a First Look:

1. It Calms the Nerves:

So many of my grooms (and brides!) say they feel way more relaxed after seeing their partner. The butterflies settle, and you get to enjoy the day together from early on.

2. More Time for Photos:

Doing a first look means we can knock out some of your couple portraits before the ceremony.  When your hair and makeup are still fresh, and the light is soft. It also means fewer photos during cocktail hour, so you get to actually enjoy it!

3. It’s Intimate:

You get to say all the things you want to say without a hundred guests watching. It’s just you, your person, and a quiet moment before the whirlwind.

What Is an Aisle Reveal?

The aisle reveal is the traditional “see you for the first time at the altar” moment. The music in the air, you walk down the aisle, and your partner sees you in that moment, it’s raw, emotional, and often tear-jerking.

Why Some Couples Prefer an Aisle Reveal:

1. It’s Dramatic & Emotional:

That first look at the altar has all the build-up, all the anticipation and for many couples, it’s the moment they’ve dreamed about forever.

2. Tradition Feels Important:

If you’ve always imagined walking toward each other for the first time in front of your friends and family, the aisle reveal is probably your perfect moment.

Still Torn? Consider This:

Do you want more private time with your partner on the day? First look.

Do you want more time to mingle post-ceremony? First look.

Do you love the idea of keeping it traditional? Aisle reveal.

Do you want to capture all the emotions in a quiet, controlled space? First look.

Either way—your moment will be unforgettable.

A Note on Photo Coverage

As your photographer, I’ll document the emotion either way, but if you do opt for a first look, we can usually:

Photograph your couple portraits before the ceremony

Get family and bridal party shots out of the way early

Maximize golden hour time if you’re planning a sunset ceremony

Bonus tip: If you’re worried about losing the “magic” of the aisle moment after a first look, don’t be. You’ll still feel all the feels walking down the aisle. Every. Single. Time.
