You’ve probably seen it listed in wedding photography packages “second photographer included.” But do you really need two photographers for your wedding day?

Spoiler: Maybe yes, maybe no.

The truth is, it depends on your vision, your timeline, and your guest count. So let’s break it down.

1. More Moments, More Angles

While I’m photographing the bride walking down the aisle, the second photographer is capturing the groom’s tear-filled reaction. While I’m focusing on couple portraits, they might be grabbing side angles, candids or ceremony details.

Having a second shooter means you get fuller coverage, more perspectives, and moments you might have missed.

2. You’re Getting Ready in Different Locations

If you and your partner are getting ready at separate locations, a second shooter is a game-changer. It allows us to capture both of your stories without having to choose who gets covered first.

3. A Larger Guest List = More Coverage Needs

If your guest list is over 100 people, one photographer may not be able to capture all the action, especially during cocktail hour, family formals, and the reception.

A second shooter helps ensure that your guests and special moments aren’t missed.

4. It Speeds Things Up (Especially for Group Shots)

While I’m organizing family formals, the second shooter can be capturing details of the reception space or candid moments between guests. It helps your timeline flow more efficiently.

5. More Photos Without More Time

You’re essentially getting double the coverage without needing to extend your photography hours. This is especially helpful if you want a robust gallery without stretching the day longer.

When You Might Not Need a Second Photographer:

You’re having a very small, intimate wedding

Your timeline is simple and your locations are close together

You’re working within a tighter budget

In these cases, one experienced photographer can absolutely get the job done beautifully (and I have many weddings like this under my belt!).

Final Thoughts:

A second shooter isn’t always a must,  but it can be a major bonus. It allows us to be in two places at once, gives you more angles, and helps your day run smoother.

If you’re not sure whether you need one, I’m happy to chat through your timeline and guest list to see what works best for you.
